Video Card: Nvidia GeForce 7300 Turbocache 256MB I get the impression that 'at the end of the day' Trace/or not, or even using Inkscape itself is all dependent on the quality of the final image, after zooming or transforations (ref. Is there a button that allows continous zooming/reduction? I can't see one! If you have a foreign-language text fragment but can't use an embedded font, or a beautiful fleuron you want to use as a section divider, or even a page of simple text that you want to keep on a single page, such as a title-page, bitmap-tracing might be the answer. A vector format, SVG files use an XML text based format which details how the image. The builtin inkscape trace bitmap can only trace edges, thus resulting in double. The best way to convert a JPG into a vector image is with tracing. It's case by case whether you need to use Bitmap Trace or not when adding raster images in Inkscape.ġ2 Start by just trying to put text on a circle (with a thin stroke and no fill) on another part of the canvas, well away from the emblem. A bitmap vectorizer that can trace along the centerline of a stroke. If I needed to alter the raster image data (filters, color, etc.) or canvas size later I would have considered using Bitmap Trace first. In this case Bitmap Trace was not required because the result is acceptable. When zooming in or out the vector data stays crisp, only the raster data is slightly distorted. The image looks good because it still has all the original raster data in a static view. I opened this JPG in Inkscape (the raster data was not altered) and added the stars and text. ![]() I've attached a SVG that contains vector and raster data. This process is called ‘Tracing’ or ‘Vectorization’. If you're simply adding a PNG or JPEG to a static SVG canvas Bitmap Trace is not required. You can use this feature to turn a raster image to paths that you can use and edit in your design. Bitmap Trace should be used when you plan to alter that data. ![]() Just select 'Colors' in the Trace Bitmap dialog, and adjust the number of scans to match the number of colors in the image. ![]() Inkscape's native file SVG is a vector format although it can be a container of raster image data. You totally can trace a color image in Inkscape.
